Why Your HVAC Sales Can Stall Without Financing - and How to Fix it

When a homeowner agrees the work is necessary but hesitates at the price, HVAC financing options can help make the cost more manageable.

Why Your HVAC Sales Can Stall Without Financing - and How to Fix it

You’ve probably experienced this before. A homeowner understands their issue, trusts your recommendation, and agrees the work is necessary, but then reality hits: the price tag.

This can often lead to “Let me think about it.”

Sometimes, the hesitation isn’t about whether your service is worth the price. It’s about how that price fits into the homeowner’s household budget. If your estimate offers only one option - paying the full amount upfront - you are leaving an important homeowner question unanswered: how will I pay for this today?

Needing the work done and having the cash available are two different things.

How to Manage Homeowner Stress

Surprise repair expenses are fairly common. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking found that 22% of U.S. adults reported a major unexpected house or appliance repair in the previous 12 months.

With that being the case, you should be aware of the homeowner’s mindset when they are faced with an emergency repair. For many homeowners, the unexpected HVAC repair or replacement costs can trigger anxiety and frustration.

Giving homeowners flexibility in how they pay helps them feel more in control of the situation. HVAC financing options allow homeowners to spread the cost of a repair or replacement over time through monthly payments. This can also make it easier to compare how different solutions - including upgrades - fit into their monthly budget

What Causes Homeowners to Pause

When homeowners hesitate, cost may be only part of the picture. HomeServe’s 2026 survey of U.S. homeowners found that 74% of homeowners have felt overwhelmed by home maintenance, and 61% said they would never attempt HVAC repairs themselves. Those findings show how unfamiliar and stressful these types of decisions can be.

Before asking a homeowner to choose a solution, help them understand your recommendation. What’s causing the problem? What can a repair accomplish? Why might replacement be worth considering? Explain the trade-offs clearly and take the time to answer any questions.

HVAC financing options should also be part of these conversations. A homeowner needs to understand both why the work makes sense and how they might pay for it.

Where A Missing Financing Option Can Stall the Sale

According to HomeServe’s survey, 56% of homeowners said they had delayed a repair because they couldn’t afford it. If HVAC financing options aren’t presented during the sales conversation, the homeowner will be left to figure out how to cover the cost on their own. This can slow their decision-making at several points:

  • At the estimate: The homeowner sees the full cost but isn’t offered any payment options other than paying upfront. Even when the work feels necessary, the full amount might be out of reach.
  • During deliberation: The homeowner leaves the conversation to think it over and figure out how to pay. With no clear payment options available, a temporary pause can turn into a delayed decision or a lost sale.
  • During the repair-versus-replace decision: They compare repair and replacement options without understanding which payment plans may be available for each. They might opt for the repair option - even when replacement could be the better long-term solution.

The takeaway for contractors: don’t leave the homeowner with only the total price to consider. Payment options help them decide which solution best fits their monthly budget.

The “How to Fix it” Part

A survey by ACCA and Farmington Consulting Group found that the average close rate is 38% when contractors don’t offer financing. When they do, the average rises to 49%.

If you’d like to see an increase in your numbers, here are our recommendations:

  1. Choose a customer financing partner. Consider factors such as the lending solutions they offer, homeowner eligibility requirements, and the level of support they provide to your team. It’s important to note that one financing partner may not be enough. Second-look financing makes financing available to more homeowners - not just those with excellent credit.
  2. Mention financing early, so homeowners understand they have flexible options right away. This can alleviate some of the stress they are feeling.
  3. Offer financing consistently; don’t make assumptions about who might need it. You never know what someone’s financial situation might be.
  4. Make the next steps clear and easy. Explain how to apply and who can answer their loan questions. Look for a customer financing partner that has a customer support team. You don’t have to be loan experts to offer financing!
  5. Promote your payment options. Many customers research HVAC companies online before making a call. Their decision to contact you may depend on whether you offer financing, so make your payment options easy to find on your website.

Help Homeowners Take the Next Step

To close more jobs and provide better customer service, start by finding out what’s holding the homeowner back when they say, “Let me think about it.” Ask questions, give homeowners a chance to share their concerns, and make sure they understand their HVAC financing options, not just the total cost.

We can’t guarantee financing will turn every estimate into a scheduled job. But financing paired with a clear recommendation and next steps gives eligible homeowners a way to move forward with the work they need.
